Pet Food Protein Labels: Dry Matter and Moisture Explained
A pouch of wet cat food may show 11% crude protein, while a bag of kibble shows 30%. At first glance, the kibble seems to contain nearly three times as much protein. That conclusion can be wrong because the two percentages include very different amounts of water.
Pet food labels usually report nutrients on an as-fed basis. This means the percentage describes the food exactly as it comes from the package, moisture included. Wet food may contain 70% to more than 85% moisture, while dry food contains far less. Water adds weight but contains no protein, so it makes the protein percentage on a high-moisture food look smaller.
Converting the figures to a dry-matter basis removes water from the calculation. This gives pet owners a fairer way to compare the nutrient concentration of foods with different moisture levels.
Dry-matter calculation is useful, but it answers only one question: how concentrated is a nutrient in the food's solid portion? It does not tell you whether a food is complete and balanced, whether its protein supplies the right amino acids, how digestible it is, how many calories your pet will eat, or whether the diet suits a medical condition.
This guide explains what the label figures mean, how to calculate dry-matter protein, why high-moisture foods often look deceptively low in protein, and what else to check before choosing a cat or dog food.
Start with the guaranteed analysis
The guaranteed analysis is the part of a pet food label that lists selected nutrient percentages. Under the common AAFCO-style format, it normally includes:
- crude protein, stated as a minimum;
- crude fat, stated as a minimum;
- crude fibre, stated as a maximum; and
- moisture, stated as a maximum.
Some labels also show ash, calcium, phosphorus, taurine, omega fatty acids, or other nutrients. Requirements differ between markets, so imported foods may use headings such as “analytical constituents,” “typical analysis,” or “composition.” Check whether each figure is a minimum, maximum, or typical value before using it.
The word crude does not mean poor quality or unrefined food. It refers to the laboratory method used to estimate a nutrient group. Crude protein is generally estimated from the food's nitrogen content. The result measures total crude protein, but it does not identify every amino acid, show digestibility, or reveal how well the pet can use that protein.
What “as fed” means
An as-fed percentage describes the nutrient as a share of the food's total weight, including water.
If a wet food contains 11% crude protein as fed, there are at least 11 grams of crude protein in 100 grams of that food, based on the label guarantee. The remaining weight includes water, fat, carbohydrate, fibre, minerals, and other components.
If a dry food contains 30% crude protein as fed, there are at least 30 grams in 100 grams of kibble. This is more protein per 100 grams of product, but the dry food also contains much less water and is often more calorie-dense.
As-fed figures are useful when you need to know what is physically present in the amount served. They are not ideal for comparing nutrient concentration across foods with very different moisture levels.
What dry matter means
Dry matter is everything left after water is removed. It includes protein, fat, carbohydrate, fibre, vitamins, and minerals.
A food with 80% moisture contains 20% dry matter. A food with 10% moisture contains 90% dry matter. Dry-matter basis expresses a nutrient as a percentage of that dry portion rather than as a percentage of the whole product.
This does not mean the manufacturer literally dries the food before you feed it. Dry matter is a mathematical comparison tool.
It is most helpful when comparing:
- wet food with kibble;
- canned food with air-dried or freeze-dried food;
- two wet foods with substantially different moisture levels; or
- nutrient levels with standards expressed on a dry-matter basis.
When two foods have almost the same moisture percentage, their as-fed values can often be compared directly for a simple first look. A dry-matter conversion becomes more important as the moisture difference grows.
The dry-matter protein formula
The calculation takes two steps.
First, find the percentage of dry matter:
Dry matter % = 100 − moisture %
Then convert protein:
Dry-matter protein % = as-fed protein % ÷ dry matter % × 100
Keep the percentages as whole numbers during the calculation. For example, use 11 and 12, not 0.11 and 0.12.
Example 1: high-moisture wet food
Suppose a wet food label shows:
- crude protein: 11% minimum;
- moisture: 88% maximum.
Dry matter is:
100 − 88 = 12%
Protein on a dry-matter basis is:
11 ÷ 12 × 100 = 91.7%
The estimated dry-matter protein is therefore about 91.7%.
That result can look surprisingly high, but remember what it means: protein makes up a large share of the small amount of solid material left after the food's water is excluded. It does not mean the unopened pouch is 91.7% protein. The food still contains about 11 grams of guaranteed protein per 100 grams as fed.
It is also an estimate based on a minimum protein guarantee and a maximum moisture guarantee. The product's typical or tested values may produce a different result.
Example 2: dry food
Suppose a kibble label shows:
- crude protein: 30% minimum;
- moisture: 10% maximum.
Dry matter is:
100 − 10 = 90%
Dry-matter protein is:
30 ÷ 90 × 100 = 33.3%
Although the kibble's as-fed protein number is much higher than 11%, its estimated protein concentration after water is removed is lower than the high-moisture example.
This is why comparing 11% wet-food protein directly with 30% dry-food protein can be misleading.
Example 3: two wet foods
Food A contains 10% protein and 80% moisture:
10 ÷ (100 − 80) × 100 = 50% dry-matter protein
Food B contains 12% protein and 82% moisture:
12 ÷ (100 − 82) × 100 = 66.7% dry-matter protein
The difference in as-fed protein is only two percentage points, but the moisture adjustment makes the difference in solid-matter concentration clearer.
A quick comparison table

These examples teach the calculation; they are not recommendations or proof that one food is superior. Real foods must be assessed using their complete label, calorie content, nutritional adequacy, manufacturer information, and the animal's needs.
Why guaranteed values can be confusing
Guaranteed analysis values are limits, not necessarily the exact average composition of the food.
A crude protein minimum of 11% means the product should contain at least that amount under the applicable guarantee. The actual protein may be higher. A moisture maximum of 88% means moisture should not exceed that level, but the actual moisture may be lower.
This matters because a dry-matter calculation combining a protein minimum with a moisture maximum produces a useful label-based estimate, not a precise batch analysis.
It also explains why guaranteed-analysis numbers may appear to add up to more than 100%. Protein and fat are usually minimums, while fibre and moisture are maximums. They are not four exact measurements from the same package that must form a perfect total.
For a closer comparison, ask the manufacturer for a typical nutrient analysis or an average analysis based on finished-product testing. Confirm whether the figures are reported as fed, on a dry-matter basis, or per unit of energy.
High moisture does not mean low protein
Water dilutes the as-fed percentage, not necessarily the nutritional importance of the protein.
High-moisture food may provide substantial protein in its dry portion while showing a modest number on the front or back of the package. Moisture also affects texture, serving size, energy density, storage, and how much additional water a pet obtains from food.
Wet food can contribute to total water intake, which may be useful for some animals. It does not remove the need for clean drinking water, and it is not automatically the best format for every pet.
A high-moisture food often supplies fewer calories per gram than kibble. This may allow a larger food volume for the same calories, although formulations vary. Conversely, a pet with a small appetite or high energy requirement may need careful portion planning to obtain enough calories from a very low-energy food.
Moisture should therefore be viewed as one characteristic of the diet, not as a quality score.
Dry matter is not the same as protein intake
Dry-matter percentage describes concentration in the food's solids. It does not show how many grams of protein your pet consumes each day.
Daily protein intake depends on:
- the food's protein concentration;
- how much food the pet eats;
- the food's calorie density;
- the pet's daily calorie intake; and
- digestibility and amino-acid availability.
Two foods can have the same dry-matter protein percentage but deliver different amounts of protein per 100 calories. If one food is much higher in fat and calories, a pet may eat a smaller quantity of it and receive a different protein intake.
For a more clinically useful comparison, veterinarians and veterinary nutritionists may assess protein as grams per 100 kilocalories or grams per 1,000 kilocalories. This energy basis relates nutrients to the calories the animal consumes.
You cannot reliably calculate grams of protein per 100 calories from minimum guaranteed protein alone if the label lacks suitable calorie and typical nutrient data. Ask the manufacturer for the value when it matters.
A higher protein percentage is not automatically better
Protein is essential. It provides amino acids used in muscles, enzymes, hormones, immune functions, skin, coat, and many other tissues. Cats and dogs have species- and life-stage-specific nutritional needs, and cats have several distinctive amino-acid and nutrient requirements.
However, the highest number on a comparison chart is not automatically the best choice.
Consider these questions:
Is the food nutritionally complete?
Look for a nutritional adequacy statement. A food labelled complete and balanced for the correct species and life stage is intended to supply all required nutrients when fed as directed under the referenced standard.
A complementary food, topper, treat, snack, or food for intermittent or supplemental feeding may contain plenty of protein but still lack other essential nutrients. High protein does not turn a complementary product into a complete diet.
Does the protein provide the required amino acids?
Crude protein measures a broad chemical category. It does not show the individual amino-acid pattern or whether those amino acids remain available after processing and digestion.
Animal and plant ingredients can both contribute protein. What matters nutritionally is whether the finished diet supplies the required amino acids in usable amounts, not whether one attractive ingredient appears first on the list.
How digestible is the finished diet?
Two foods with the same crude protein figure may differ in digestibility. The guaranteed analysis normally does not report protein digestibility.
Manufacturers should have qualified nutrition expertise, formulation controls, finished-product checks, and quality-control processes. WSAVA's nutrition resources encourage owners to look beyond marketing and the ingredient list when evaluating a food company.
Is it appropriate for this pet?
A healthy growing kitten, a sedentary adult dog, a pregnant animal, and a pet with a diagnosed disease do not all have the same nutritional needs.
Do not select or reject a diet for kidney, liver, urinary, gastrointestinal, or other disease using the protein percentage alone. Medical diets may balance protein quantity with protein quality, phosphorus, sodium, energy density, fibre, fat, and other features. Ask the veterinarian responsible for the pet's care before making a therapeutic diet change.
Reading the ingredient list alongside protein
Ingredients are generally listed by weight before processing or as formulated, depending on the market's labelling system. Fresh meat contains considerable water, so it may appear high on the list partly because of its moisture. A dried protein ingredient has already lost much of that water and can contribute a concentrated amount despite appearing differently.
This is another reason ingredient order cannot replace nutrient analysis.
The ingredient list remains useful for identifying declared ingredients, checking a known intolerance under veterinary guidance, and understanding the recipe. It does not directly reveal the finished food's digestibility, amino-acid balance, quality-control standards, or suitability.
Avoid judging a food from terms such as “premium,” “natural,” “high meat,” or “high protein” alone. Check the regulated information and ask the manufacturer precise questions.
A practical label-reading sequence
Use this order when comparing foods:
- Confirm the species. Cat food and dog food are not interchangeable as regular diets.
- Check the nutritional adequacy statement. Identify whether the food is complete and balanced and for which life stage, or complementary/supplemental only.
- Read the feeding directions and calorie content. These help you understand realistic portions and energy intake.
- Find protein and moisture in the guaranteed or typical analysis. Note whether each is a minimum, maximum, or average.
- Convert to dry matter when moisture differs substantially. Use the same basis for every product.
- Compare nutrients per calorie when intake or medical nutrition matters. Request grams per 100 or 1,000 kilocalories from the manufacturer if necessary.
- Look beyond the number. Consider amino-acid adequacy, digestibility evidence, formulation expertise, quality control, and feeding trials or nutrient-profile substantiation.
- Match the food to the individual pet. Account for age, body condition, activity, health, appetite, and veterinary advice.
This sequence prevents a single prominent percentage from overpowering the more important question: does the whole diet meet this pet's needs?
Questions to ask a manufacturer
If the label does not provide enough information, contact the company and ask:
- Is this food complete and balanced, and for which species and life stage?
- Is the published analysis guaranteed, typical, or based on recent finished-product testing?
- What are the protein and moisture values as fed and on a dry-matter basis?
- How many grams of protein does the food provide per 100 or 1,000 kilocalories?
- What is the metabolizable energy in kilocalories per can, pouch, cup, 100 grams, or kilogram?
- Who formulates the food, and what nutrition qualifications do they hold?
- What finished-product nutrient and safety testing is performed?
- Can the company provide a full nutrient analysis for veterinary review?
A responsible company should be able to explain its figures clearly or obtain the information from its technical team.
Common mistakes to avoid
Comparing wet and dry food directly as fed
An 11% wet food is not directly comparable with a 30% kibble when their moisture levels differ greatly. Convert both to the same basis.
Treating dry-matter protein as the amount in the package
A result of 91.7% dry-matter protein does not mean 91.7 grams of protein in every 100 grams of wet food. It describes the protein share of the moisture-free portion.
Assuming the calculation is exact
Minimum protein and maximum moisture guarantees create an estimate. Typical analysis may be more representative of the average product.
Choosing the largest number
More is not always better. Nutritional completeness, amino-acid supply, calories, digestibility, life stage, health, and feeding amount all matter.
Ignoring “complementary” or “supplemental” wording
A meat-rich can or pouch can have impressive protein figures but still be unsuitable as the sole diet. Check the adequacy statement before regular feeding.
Adding all guaranteed values as though they are exact
Minimum and maximum guarantees can overlap in a way that produces a total above 100%. This does not automatically prove that the label is fraudulent, although genuine errors or unclear units should be queried with the manufacturer or local regulator.
The key takeaway
Moisture changes how protein appears on a pet food label. To compare foods with different water content, subtract moisture from 100, divide the as-fed protein by the remaining dry matter, and multiply by 100.
The formula is simple:
Protein ÷ (100 − moisture) × 100
Use the result as a comparison tool, not a verdict. Dry-matter protein does not measure protein quality, amino-acid balance, digestibility, calories, or the overall adequacy of the diet.
The best label reading combines the dry-matter calculation with the adequacy statement, calorie information, feeding directions, reliable manufacturer data, and knowledge of the individual pet. If your cat or dog has a medical condition, poor appetite, weight change, or unusual nutritional needs, review the whole diet with a veterinarian or board-certified veterinary nutrition specialist.
